Sustainable Development Goals: Exploring Maritime Opportunities

Who’s behind it? – DNV GL, Norwegian Ship-owners’ Association

How can it help? – This report by DNV GL, commissioned by the Norwegian Ship-owners’ Association, explores the shipping industry’s current and potential level of contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals.  The report examines how shipping can contribute to achieving the SDGs through: managing its own operations sustainably; influencing and setting requirements for suppliers in the maritime industry; and enabling other industries in the ocean space to generate economic growth and work, while protecting natural resources. It begins with an examination of how the industry is already contributing to achieving the goals, before then looking forward towards emerging opportunities for enhanced engagement and alignment. In particular, the report identifies five main opportunity areas where the industry can drive significant impact towards the realization of the 2030 Agenda:

  • Acting on the Paris Agreement
  • Building sustainable communities & infrastructure
  • Protecting life in the oceans
  • Create a sustainable future for the ocean economy
  • Promote responsible practices
