Financing a Sustainable European Economy
Who’s behind it? – EU High-Level Expert Group on Sustainable Finance
How can it help? – In December 2016, the European Commission established a High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) on sustainable finance with the remit of developing an overarching EU strategy on sustainable finance to integrate sustainability into EU financial policy. This Interim Report presents the results of the expert group’s findings thus far.
The report identifies two imperatives for Europe’s financial system. The first is to strengthen financial stability and asset pricing, by improving the assessment of long-term risks and intangible factors of value creation including those related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. The second is to improve the contribution of the financial sector to sustainable and inclusive growth, notably by financing innovation and infrastructure, and accelerating the shift to low carbon and resource-efficient economy.
